Full Home Inventory (Plus a House Tour)

The question I get most often when I post anything about my Project 3000 progress is 'do you even have 3,000 items in your home?!'  Short answer, no.  Long answer is that I created an inventory of every item in our home, with the caveat being that I didn't include most consumable items because they aren't permanent (duh.)

I really started this project as a way to track valuables for home insurance purposes but also to track the number of my own items that were permanent fixtures.  (I'm already working my way through all my consumables, I hope to decrease these and then count only what's always in my collection, like I always have 1 mascara.)

So the full home inventory (because yes, I created a spreadsheet) can be found here You can really checkout all the details about things like how many spoons we have.  But I figured it would be nice to do a home tour along with, since I do one ever year and share the little changes we make along the way.  Although I guess two big changes you'll see are the 82 inch monster TV and a brand new deck in the backyard.

Our Bedroom

John's Bathroom

Halloween Closet. Literally. All Halloween decor.

My Bathroom

Laundry Room

Upstairs

And that's it!  Well, I did forget to photograph the extra bedroom where we have the treadmill, and I'm too lazy to go back and add it now, but I did inventory it.  I think you can clearly see where we have more work to do (attic, laundry room) and which big changes we've made (flooring, sunroom, deck.)  Making the inventory was a great exercise!  Going forward, I'll probably continue to not track things like John's clothing because it changes so often, and continue to track new 'stuff' that becomes permanent, like any wall decor or furniture pieces.  I'm also going to watch my personal care items because I think I have more than I use and could benefit from decreasing the stash and adopting a one in, one out rule for more makeup.

Hope you enjoyed seeing all our updates and checking out the home inventory.  I am as minimalist as you thought?  How many things do you think you have in your home?

Why I Simplify (Everything)

Wednesday, May 22, 2019

If you remember from the beginning of the year, my word for 2019 has been 'edit.'  I've absolutely been sticking with that for the last 6 months, even getting a new job so I could edit out the biggest annoyances of my old one - taking the train every day and going to court.  I'm constantly editing my wardrobe and meals and what I do with this blog.  Edit and simplify.  I thought I would share a few of the top reasons that came to mind about why I love to simplify so much, why I put the effort in to think through everything and edit my choices this year.  Also known as 'what I actually love doing with all my free time and money that I now have since simplifying everything in my life.'

My 5 Minute Makeup Routine

I like getting up early-ish in the mornings.  I find I'm able to get a lot done if I wake up when John does, since he leaves for work over an hour before I need to.  But a full face of makeup is not one of those things I want to spend my productive morning hour on (and I'd also need to spend more time taking it off at the end of the day, which I never feel like doing.)  I'm just not up for the whole entire makeup routine - I save that for evenings out when I feel like playing around.  In the mornings before work, I'd rather just get it done in 5 minutes and get out the door.  I know a lot of people feel the same way, so I thought I would share my routine and products.  And I have timed it!  This does take me just a few minutes:

Simple Homemaking Habits

There's a lot of different facets of getting back on track on my to do list.  One of the main aspects of that is our home.  When I straighten up and maintain the house, it always makes it feel like the rest of my life is together too.  Of course, since I’m so minimalist, it’s actually incredibly easy to get back on track with homemaking, and to stay there.  Just one of the many benefits of not having crap around - super easy to clean and organize even if every single item is out of place at the same time.  Even without being as extremely anti-stuff as I am, though, you can still adopt these super simple homemaking habits to keep your home in order too.

My Minimalist Skin Care Lineup

Like everything else in my life, my skin care has to be minimalist too.  And clean, and cruelty free.  Since I already updated you on my minimalist makeup collection, it seemed like sharing the clean and natural skin care lineup was next up.  Not that I don't believe in a multitude of great skin care products - there's tons.  And they do work.  I just don't remember to use them all and don't see a difference in my own skin when I do.  So I stick to my basics and I find that my skin is responding really well.  Which means I'll keep chugging along, because if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
